Introducing the player editor!

August 13, 2015   by Katie Butz

After several rounds of testing with pilot customers, we're ready to roll out our newest feature, the player editor! The concept behind the player editor is that it will now simultaneously update website bios and shared (formerly stats) rosters, allowing you to keep track of only one team roster.

By combining your website bios and shared rosters, we've made managing, editing and aging rosters much easier. We've also incorporated various import/export features to include Stat Crew rosters and CSV files.

What happens to my existing rosters?

The biggest challenge for this feature was the initial synchronization of the website bios and the shared roster for seasons that already have content. The first time you view a season in the player editor, it will prompt you on how to sync your bios and shared rosters. There are four scenarios you could see:

1. You have already added your website bios, but not shared roster  the system will create and sync your shared roster through the website bios.

2. You have already added your shared roster, but not website bios  the system will create and sync your website bios through the shared roster.

3. You have already added both your shared rosters and website bios  the system will give you the option to choose which roster you want to sync from. We suggest to sync them from the shared roster that has more complete information.

4. You have not added any website bios or stats roster  the system will walk you through how to add new players.

Through the syncing process, you might be informed that there are certain fields that don't match up. We will give you the opportunity to rectify any small differences before saving your new combined roster.

Some additional improvements

1. One of the biggest changes you'll see upon editing is that each player now gets his or her own page instead of a pop-up window. We did this for two reasons:

  • We want to be able to show you what your fans will see
  • We can now show player stats reports here as well

2. Bats and Throws are now standard fields! You no longer have to enter this information into the "custom" field you have set up on your site. You can now choose from our three standard options: Left, Right, Switch.

3. We've also added a handful of improvements to stats in bios!

  • You no longer have to go through the Website tab to add stats to bios. Adding enhanced stats and career stats can now both be done through the player editor.
  • The stats highlights that appear on the player's bio is no longer associated with position. You will now see a "Stat Category" drop down menu to choose the stats grouping to show.

The player editor is an essential first step in moving towards some advanced features that are right around the corner. Next up is the News tabs for related stories. We also plan to add a Photos tab, image tagging, batch headshot updating and much more!
