Responsive bios released for everyone

March 17, 2015   by Neil Sleight

This week we are rolling out a new look to all bios which will give everyone access to a responsive layout. We are once again thinking mobile first, and with this change we can now support all of the great features like stats in bios on all devices including the smallest of phones.

The best part of this change to bios is it goes out to everyone right away! That means no waiting for a redesign; you will get this look regardless if you have a fully responsive site or if you still have a MobileNow version. For those of you who still have the MobileNow version of the site, the screen shot to the right gives you a preview of how your bios will look.

The biggest change in the new responsive bios is the addition of mobile-friendly stats and stats tabs. Previously when you viewed a bio on a mobile device, we had to hide all the enhanced bio features you were used to seeing on a large screen. Now we carry that design over from the large screen and format it to fit best on any screen size.

We also updated the styles of the stats tabs to give it a fresh look. Lastly, we now carry the font from your website over to the bios to help keep that branded look of your site across all pages.

We decided this change was needed in order to set everyone up for success in the future. Each month, we continue to see an uptick in traffic to your sites from a mobile device, so your mobile site should have the best look that it can. This change also sets the foundation to make all bios even better in the future and show off more great content about all your student athletes.

As with any big change, we had to make a few compromises on what we currently support. In the past, many of you had added your logo to every bio, and while this looked great on a large screen, it is not mobile-friendly. Secondly, that logo was taking up space that we repurposed, so we are doing away with logos in bios and some other custom CSS elements in order to give everyone this clean look that is responsive across all devices.

Below are two screen shots of what bios will look like on a large screen. First is an example from Butler, who has a narrower site width, so we keep everything in one column with the bio information stacked on top of the stats tabs. Next is an example from Endicott, with a much larger site width. We take advantage of the extra width and use a two-column look placing the bio information on the left and the stats tabs on the right.

Let us know what you think of these changes!
